What makes a great pitch on Startup Matchbox

By Fernanda Alvarenga·Published on 8/12/2026

Within Startup Matchbox, a pitch should not be viewed simply as a presentation.
It is a mutual evaluation process.
The startup is assessing whether the company represents a meaningful opportunity.
The company is assessing whether the startup can realistically help solve its challenge.
The strongest pitches are therefore not the most sophisticated. They are the most relevant.

For startups: focus on the problem

One of the most common mistakes is spending too much time explaining the technology.
Companies do not need to understand every technical detail.

They need to understand:

• what problem is being solved;
• why the solution is relevant;
• what impact it can generate.

Technology should support the story, not dominate it.

Demonstrate execution capability

A good idea is rarely enough.
Companies look for signals that the startup can deliver.

Useful evidence includes:

• relevant experience;
• similar projects;
• measurable results;
• technical capability.

The goal is to reduce perceived risk.

Be transparent about limitations

Attempting to present a perfect picture can be counterproductive.
Companies often value startups that openly discuss assumptions, risks and constraints.
Transparency builds credibility.

For companies: look for alignment, not only innovation

When evaluating a pitch, it is easy to focus on the novelty of the technology.

However, the most important questions are often:

• Does this solution actually address the problem?
• Has the startup understood the context?
• Can the team execute?
• Is there openness to collaborate and adapt?

The most innovative solution is not always the most appropriate one.

The objective is not to impress

A good pitch is not designed to impress. It is designed to create confidence.
Confidence that there is a meaningful problem, a credible solution and two organisations capable of working together.
That confidence is often what leads to the strongest collaborations.

👉 Whether you are pitching or evaluating a pitch, focus on the problem, the impact and the potential for collaboration.
