How to turn a business challenge into an innovation opportunity

How to turn a business challenge into an innovation opportunity

Por Fernanda Alvarenga·Publicado a 7/24/2026

When a company decides to work with startups, the first challenge is rarely technological.
More often, it is about defining the problem itself.
The quality of the responses received is strongly influenced by the quality of the challenge being published.
Poorly defined challenges tend to attract generic responses.
Well-structured challenges tend to attract better solutions.

Start with the problem, not the solution

One of the most common mistakes is to define the desired solution too early.
For example:
“We are looking for an AI solution.”
or
“We need a platform with these specific features.”

While understandable, this approach can limit the range of solutions available.
Instead, companies should focus on describing:

• the problem being experienced;
• who is affected;
• the impact on the business;
• the desired outcomes.

The clearer the need, the more relevant the responses tend to be.

Context creates better applications

Startups make decisions based on the information available.
When challenges lack context, applications often become generic.
Providing information about the current situation, operational constraints, objectives and success criteria helps startups understand the real problem and propose more relevant approaches.

Evaluate outcomes, not only technology

Technology matters.
However, technology alone rarely solves a business problem.
The key question should be:

“What result can this solution generate?”
The strongest applications usually demonstrate:
• understanding of the challenge;
• practical applicability;
• execution capability;
• measurable impact.

Better challenges create better collaborations

The objective of publishing a challenge is not simply to collect applications.
It is to identify potential partners capable of solving a real business problem.
Investing time in defining the challenge is often one of the highest-leverage actions a company can take.
